Goat Street, Swansea

The center of Swansea in february 1941 after heavy bombing

You are in the centre of Swansea on 22nd February, 1941. For three nights in a row aircraft have dropped thousands of bombs on the town, and these wardens must be wondering if it will ever stop. About 230 people have died.

For two nights men like these had fought fires and helped people to safety, but on the third there has been nothing they could do. As they look at the photographer, they seem tired and dazed. Goat Street and several others will not be rebuilt.

One warden met a shopkeeper who had saved his own premises. She told him might just as well have let it burn, because ‘my Swansea is dead.’
