Baby’s petticoat with utility label
Clothing was rationed during World War II.
There was a Utility Clothing Scheme which produced four main things: coats, suits, dresses and blouses. These used less material than before, as well as less sewing time. All were marked with the CC41 label – you can see one in the top right hand corner.
This petticoat was for a baby less than one year old, and is made of cotton lawn. Despite being plainer, some utility clothing sometimes seems very well made by our standards – some utility overcoats, for example, survive in excellent condition.
Activity: Connections
Look at the picture and read, listen to, or print the story.
Now think about how any of the pictures might connect, save the Connections Write Sheet and use your imagination to explain how you think they could connect.
